What is SCA?

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a requirement that has been introduced for online payments in the European Economic Area (EEA) as part of the second Payment Service Directive (PSD2). Its objective is to further improve and modernise Europe’s payment services for the benefit of consumers and businesses alike by reducing fraud and making online payments more secure. In order to achieve this, SCA validates your identity when you perform certain payment services or transactions. These transactions require authorisation by at least two of the following three elements.

What changes have already been made?

Wirex has complied with the requirements set out for SCA by adding secondary confirmations to online transactions, bank transfers out, and internal/external crypto transfers. This has not affected transactions that are £45 or less or contactless payments.

You and your Wirex account

We have already implemented SMS authentication for all Wirex customers, and not just those in the EEA. We truly believe the security protocols and features that have been set out in this initiative are important in creating an even better, more secure service, which is why we’ve rolled it out to all Wirex users, regardless of location.

A gentle reminder:

Please keep in mind that when you make online payments, bank transfers out and initiate internal/external crypto transfers, you will be sent a randomly-generated code via SMS which you will then need to input into your Wirex app in order to complete the transaction. This will happen every time you do one of the actions mentioned above. Additionally, if you log into Wirex from a new device an SMS will be sent to you to confirm the action. Once the SMS code is sent to you, you will have 5 minutes to complete the process. If you do not complete it within that time frame, the action will be denied. Please be aware that if 5 failed confirmation attempts occur, you will be locked out. We will, of course, inform you before any permanent block is set into place to give you a chance to regain access to your Wirex account.
